Resilience

We had a great energiser, where we had to work together.

We talked about how we might feel before starting something challenging... then the feelings we might have throughout... and then almost at the end.
We discussed the feelings or emotions inside. What we felt like inside!

We have to show resilience, self control and manage our emotions to keep on going.
If we have a goal to achieve, no matter what it is, we have to keep going. We wrote a letter to ourselves to give us positive encouragement to keep us going...

Self control

Keeping calm and in control,
Helps us all to reach our goals.

We are learning to be resilient by showing self control. We played a game where we had to try and throw the beanbags in the bucket.

It was really hard to get them in. Sometimes the bucket tipped over... Noah and Kareem managed to get all 3 beanbags in the bucket! - Noah did this twice!
When we missed, it was frustrating, but the more we kept trying the better we got.

Frustration and anger is s little bit like a balloon. Sometimes it takes one more thing... and we get frustrated. If we leave it unmanaged it gets bigger and bigger and it can pop.

Resilience

We are talking about anger and frustration. They are emotions that happen so we are talking about how to deal with them.

We had a fantastic game to begin today, where we got really excited

Reece & Owen role-played a scenario where there was friction between them... we thought it was s real argument, where Reece wasn't very nice and embarrassed Owen in front of us.  We talked about managing our emotions. There are a range of different emotions that went on during the scenario: angry, stressed, confused, awkward, worried.

We talked about the consequences of not managing our emotions.
- causing a divide.
- impacting on other Kiwi Can leaders.
- losing our job.
- getting in trouble.

We talked about better ways of dealing with the situation, so that the problems don't occur.

Resilience

"Sometimes I'm happy. Sometimes I'm sad.
Sometimes I'm angry, sometimes I'm mad.
I have to remember, every day,
To deal with feelings in a positive way."

Our focus is to be really resilient and ignore distractions.

We played bench ball, which really tested our resilience because we sometimes dropped the ball. The no goose guarding team made it fairer.
There were some questionable moments where people felt others weren't fair, and our competitive natures came out.
We talked about the emotions we felt while playing the game!

Ki o rahi trials

Our seniors had trials for the school Ki O Rahi teams today. It was great to see them managing the game themselves and having a great time!

Diwali

Siona explained to us about Diwali - the Indian Festival of Lights.
As part of the celebrations, sweets are made. The type of sweet is different, depending on the part of India you are from.
Siona is performing at the Horncastle Arena as part of the celebration.

Bible in schools assembly

Watch what you watch and watch what you eat.

Mr Marty and Roy were in today for our Bible Assembly to start the term.

We gave Diesel some advice about how he should eat healthier. We need to think about how we can be healthier by eating healthier.

We learned about how marketing advertisers trick us into recognising advertising logos and brands. The average child sees 15 advertisements advertising junk food.

We talked about how we can help people who don't like to read.
As always, we finished with a game of Zonk! - won by the boys 85 - 20

Our Last Rams Session

Today was our last session with the Canterbury Rams.
We have absolutely loved having them with us, teaching us skills and getting us excited about basketball. There is always somebody using the new hoop!

Resilience

"Sometimes I'm happy, sometimes I'm sad.
Sometimes I'm angry, sometimes I'm mad.
I have to remember every day,
to deal with these feelings in a positive way."
Noughts and Crosses
We played noughts and crosses. It got quite frustrating at times, however we had make sure  we are staying positive. Katie changed the rules so we needed to make sure  we were listening so we knew what had changed.

Katie shared an experience from when she was at school and struggled with math. She talked about how she could have dealt with it in a better way.

We each had a numbered list of different emotions... Reece gave us a number. We needed to find a way to shoe the emotion for that number.
Modelling our emotion

Reliability

You can count on me, to get the job done. You can always trust me. I'm the reliable one.

It's great to be back in our hall for Kiwi Can!

We started with a game.
We had to carry a ball between our knees to the other end. It felt a bit silly, and it was quite tricky for some.

We recapped on last weeks session about reliability and trust. We gave examples of things we could do to show we could've trusted. For our activity, we had to work together to pick a card (which had a letter on it). We had to silently communicate with each other to get into a line in alphabetical order.

New hub in action

We have been having a great time experiencing our long awaited hub! We have left half of our furniture in the old hub! - Maybe we don't need it!?
Before habitation...

Collaborating towards self-managing our learning

We have been using SOLO taxonomy to talk about how we are going to work towards being self managed learners with our devices.

We broke into groups to brainstorm what each category might look like in our new hub.
We then came back inside and collated our ideas together, on the board.

Soaking learning like sponges

Twelve Gilberthorpe students were privileged to attend the first inaugural Uru Manuka Student Summit, at Hornby Primary today. 6 students presented Toolkits to other akonga in pairs.
They attended (and presented) Toolkits on topics ranging from robotics, voki, scratch coding, using apps...
Afterwards, the 90 students were able to take their new knowledge back and share it with the akonga in their classrooms.

Say what you do, Do what you say, Be responsible every day.

Life skills

Hajimi
We got to play with weapons today, while learning to show self discipline.
Did you know that nunchucks were originally used to mash herbs and spices. A baton was originally a locking pin for a cart.

Last day of winter sport

In the warm sunshine, we had our last day of winter sport for the year.
Both netball teams were down to 6 players each, with illness and injury.
Our teams have come a long way. They now work really well as a team!
