Merry Christmas!

This week we have been working on creating an online Christmas Card. We are learning to make animations and also to write Christmas poetry in the form of a recipe. Hope you enjoy!

A Recipe for the Best Christmas Yet!
Ingredients:
A Houseful of family
1 Gallon of love
A Table full of lunch
4 Teaspoons of smiles
A Dash of laughter
4 Sprinkles of joy

Gather all ingredients in one room. Pour love into a big bowl. Sprinkle smiles overtop and mix well. Place lunch and laughter in a separate bowl and knead together. Use family and joy to bind both bowls together. Keep warm. Your Christmas is now ready! Enjoy!

Writing

In the last two weeks we have been working on our writing based on a video. The video we watched is called Marshmallow and it is from the Literacy Shed's fun page! Here are some pictures from the clip. Can you guess what it is about?

We learnt about adjectives and verbs. For example "The slimy green sea monster stalked its prey from a distance."
We also learnt about onomatopoeia - words that make the sound they are. "Splash! He jumped out of the lake and crept up behind his next victim."

We are looking at different ways to post our writing so that more people want to read it. We thought about only showing a hook, or the first paragraph in a slide. Do you have any other suggestions?

If you want to see any of the writing. Please go to the blogs down the right hand side :) Our students would love to see some comments here!

Maori Art

This term we have been learning about Mãori symbols and tone or shading as an art form. We learnt a whakatauki for the series of lessons and we have been learning a new kīwaha each week. Which one is your favourite and why?

The slide we are following is here:

Last week even Miss Morgan had an attempt at drawing a tiki... Do you think you could? We found it quite tricky!

This week we are learning to explore colour! In particular we are learning about complementary colours. What do you know about these? Do you have any examples of your own?

This weeks value! Rest & Relaxation!

STEPS Program

This year the Senior Hub have been trailing the STEPS Web program to try and improve our spelling. There are different levels and you can achieve bronze, silver or gold medals in each activity. Once you have achieved gold in a level, it gets locked and you can not go back and repeat it. The activity page looks like this:
Lots of the student in the class find Word Grid really tricky! That is because you have to remember a number of words that it says in the correct order. Miss Morgan has told us that because we find it tricky, we need to make sure we are getting gold on it before we move on!

If you wanted to try out this program there is a 10 day trail here: https://stepsweb.com/

Hunter's Ikan Test

Yesterday we did our own Ikan test. I think I did well? Ikan is when you get 3 seconds for each question.

The thing I enjoyed the most is videoing my own Ikan Test.

#littlegarden!

On Tuesday Rata class got to start on our little gardens. If you don't know what a little garden is well... it is a promotion from New World. Our school got sent a pack of seeds, dirt biscuits, instructions, and a little container to grow the plants.

It was so cool to see all of the different types of vegetables and herbs, some of which we had never heard of before!

Then it was our mission to find out some tips for our plants. Where they like to grow, how much water we can give and interesting facts. The students have posted these to their blogs - you can have a look down the right hand side of this blog.

There was one interesting thing we have thought about our plants. We need to babysit them over the holidays! How would you do this?
Here are some images of our plants...

We can not wait to eat them later in the year!!!

HOUSE OF LEGO!

Today we were super lucky to have Rachel from House of Lego visit.
We were looking into our world!

The outline of the program was...
"Ever wanted to do gardening but don’t want to get dirty?  Well now your students can get hands on and design a garden with a purpose and think about the environment.  What makes an elephant look different to a giraffe?  Why do the Pyramids in Egypt look different to Eiffel Tower in Paris?  Students will take the time to build various buildings and animals,  they will need to consider their shapes and what makes them unique so it can be called what it is."

It relates to what is happening for us at the moment with new buildings coming and thinking about what makes us special and unique. Also, we are starting our #littlegarden this afternoon! So look forward for posts to come!

Make sure you check out our blogs to see some more information and photos about what we have learnt in House of Lego.

Update!

This term is going so quickly! While Miss M has been away sick, we have had lots of learning opportunities.

This weeks focus is Food for Thought! We are learning about the different food groups, as well as, which foods full us up and which ones give us energy.

In Kiwican, we are learning about resilience and the module that we are focusing on is perseverance. Rata kids are very good at doing this. We know how to show perseverance in our learning especially when we find a learning task difficult. STEPS is getting our attention for this this week.

In Kapahaka, we are learning to do a new haka. This is pretty fun and we are sounding awesome! Maybe next week I could upload a video of us! Would you like that?

In Blogging, we have been working on creating really good blog comments. We are using sentence starters and hopefully you have had a quality comment from us! If you do not know how to do this, ask one of us and we can help!

We also have been learning about screencastify to show our maths, writing or reading. Maybe you will see some of these on the students blogs down the side!

The students blogs get updated a lot more often then our class one, so if you have time check them out!

Hope everyone is loving the spring weather! We sure are!

Kiwi Can!

This term we have a new time for Kiwican, Wednesday 10.15am.
We are learning about Resilience this term - what a perfect thing to be talking about with the Olympics coming up!
Goal setting is also an awesome module to be talking about with our student led conferences coming up next week. We will be talking to our parents about our goals for Numeracy and Literacy.

I wonder what other goals you may have this term?

For me it's seeing how much you can achieve!

Saturday League!

Today I had the privilege of watching Blake, Bryce and Hunter play league. What awesome players!!! Good team work and lead by a great coach.
Hunter managed to side step his way out of many tackles! Blake put the pressure on the other team and made some awesome tackles! Bryce was quick with an awesome fend and scored quite a few trys!
I especially liked watching them support the other team when their players got hurt by switching sides. It was cool to see Blake vs. Bryce!
I am pretty sure there are some future Warriors in my class!
Well done lads! Can't wait to see you vs those Papanui Tigers!

New Routine

At the start of week 5 we began a new literacy and numeracy rotation. We changed it so that all students could see all teachers each day and every week the teachers change around. The teachers are really loving it! What do the students think I wonder?

friday funday!!!!!

Last Friday we went to Jelly park for Friday funday, the whole school was fantastic so we got to go! It was exciting because it was the first whole school trip. When the roll was done we got on the school bus and when everyone was on we got going to Jelly park. When we got there we had to listen to the instructions before we go inside. The first instruction was no running around the pools. The second instruction is no yelling to loud so don’t hurt people’s ears. The third thing you need to know is don’t talk to strangers. The fourth instruction you need to know is have fun on the hydroslide. After we were finished the instructions.  we went inside to get changed in the bathroom. When everyone was changed we went straight to the pools. The first thing I went on was the hydroslide and it was the slow one because I was scared of going on the fast ones. After going on the slow one a few times i decided to go on the fast ones, so i did. After I went on the fast ones few times it was time to have an ice cream and lunch. After i ate my lunch i went back on the hydroslide.

Recounts

This term we have been working on writing recounts.
A recount is a true story about something that has happened to you.
It needs a title using interesting words and it needs to tell you when, where, who, and what. The events should be in an order and it should end with a personal statement about how you felt about the day.
We have also looked at orientation, sentence structure and this week (week 7) we are looking at vocabulary.
We hope you enjoy our stories :)
Please comment on them!
